The h is silent
Hello, my name is Walther. Yes, like the gun. I recently found out this is the German spelling of Walter. Am I German? No, I’m Mexican-American. How did I end up with a German name? Let me tell you the story.
My mom was a teacher in Monterrey, MX (my hometown) in the 80s and she claims that she had a student named Walter and ever since then filed the name under “Boy names for my future children”. She was also into numerology which claims that the numerical value of your name influences areas of your personal and professional development. Adding an h to Walter would make me pioneering, leading, independent, attaining, and individualistic.
It took me twenty-eight years on Earth to get out of my parent's home. I’m not sure if the h in my name had anything to do with that. I moved from Monterrey to Phoenix and all of a sudden I was in a country where the letters t and h together make a sound. In Spanish (my native language) the h is silent. Whether that affects my personality or not, now I have an icebreaker for whenever I have to spell my name. I’m a big hit at doctor's offices.
I want to become a writer and from what I’ve read so far blogging is a good way to get started. That’s the main reason I started this newsletter.
What will I be writing about, you ask?
Going from Mexican to Mexican-American (I recently became a US citizen)
My attempts to become the best father and husband I can be
The moments that have left a mark on my life
