Hello friends! Welcome to another edition of Heavyweight, a monthly report of my fitness journey.
Movement
The first couple of weeks of this month were great. I started Dry Fighting Weight with a heavier kettlebell and was feeling strong. I completed six sessions of that, plus a couple of kettlebell swing sessions, and then I got sick as a dog. The week of the 24th was slightly better, but I found myself lacking any motivation to move. I’m hoping to ramp up slowly in October.
Nutrition
My friend Brandon asked if I’d be interested in holding each other accountable about nutrition and exercise, and I took him up on his offer. We have been tracking our food via MyFitnessPal, trying to hit our daily protein goals and stay in a caloric deficit while not feeling like we’re starving.
Knowing that I had to log my food and tell Brandon about my progress prevented me from indulging in too many empty calories. I have to say the first week of September was trial and error as I was checking multiple TDEE calculators and feeling like I was overeating and saw some weight gain. The second week was probably my best week. I was getting the hang of it; a couple of trips to Costco to get better snacks helped a ton, and I discovered a couple of favorite combos that left me satiated and hit the macros big time, i.e., a snack plate with pork rinds, salami, cheese, and a piece of fruit.
And then I got sick, and I only wanted to eat ramen. And then, I got better and took some time getting back on the wagon. I took Diana’s birthday as an excuse to eat a lot of pastries, and my sister and BIL were in town, so I indulged quite a bit while they were here.
Results
Overall, this month started very well and ended quite poorly. I went from 329 to 332, which is the opposite of what I was trying to do. I don’t want to be fatalistic, but I would lie if I didn’t tell you I’m kinda bummed out and disappointed with myself.
And the fact that I’m publicly shaming myself is very uncomfortable.
However, shame is good in that it is propelling me to have a great month in October and come back on November 1st and tell you about all my progress.

Before you go
What motivates you to eat healthy/workout?
Why is ramen so comforting?
Can I make October my comeback month?
1. What motivates me is trying to be strong and healthy for my kids. I remember having a mom who was obese and how hard that was on her which turned out to be hard on my brother and I in different ways. You’re on the right track!!
2. Ramen is pure nostalgia for me and I do enjoy it but cannot tell you the last time I had it. We don’t keep it in the house because we’ll eat all of it.
3. This is the month to do it!! It’s tho month of the Holy Rosary so make your health an intention and cover it in prayer!
Focus on carbs, stay away from fresh fruit. Once you lose weight, then you can gradually introduce other things. I lost 35 lbs in Five months via Phd Weight Loss. Excellent program, sensible. Carb management is what counts.
