What a beautifully written article Walther. I picked up BJJ last year at 38, so I totally resonate with your experience. I also have small family so I share the protection angle.
I really don’t think I had the heart as a child to do BJJ, but as an adult I need that outlet and something to work toward. It’s also a fantastic way to socialize.
I did BJJ and judo as a teenager, and it was so interesting to read about your experience with it. I especially liked your comparison to chess. I haven’t practiced BJJ for several years, but I do think the training has helped me to feel safer and more confident than my many of my friends who never had any training in self-defense. It’s a great discipline!

Very cool. I have a similar story. I've been taking Taekwondo for about 16 months now. Love it.
There is a BJJ studio in our city too, I think that will be next on my list.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

Here’s to sticking to it! :)
Congrats, Walther! Keep it up and stay safe out there. <3

I had the same justification for starting and experience with bjj. I’ve since had to quit, but at some point I’m gonna pick it back up!
